Hans Jakob Nägeli

Johann Jakob Nägeli (* 1736 in Zurich ; † February 27, 1806 there ) was a Swiss pastor , composer and choir director .

Nägeli grew up as the son of pastor Johann Caspar Nägeli in Zurich. He studied theology there and was ordained in 1756. From 1759 he worked as a vicar in Hütten . After the sudden death of Johannes Schmidlin , Nägeli succeeded him as pastor in Wetzikon in 1772 . There he also took over the management of the 200-strong Singgesellschaft and the Collegium musicum , which he held until the end of his life. In 1793 he received the deanery of the chapter, in 1798 he was appointed school inspector in Grüningen .

Nägeli had the nickname "Model Village Pastor" and was seen as enlightening . He was valued as a music connoisseur throughout the canton. Other activities included composing (including a cantata for the inauguration of the Wädenswil Church in 1767) and agriculture (including a publication in 1771 on the planting and use of potatoes ). He was a member of the Zurich Natural Research Society .

On December 27, 1767 he married Emerentiana Wirz, he had four sons with her; the oldest Hans Konrad Nägeli followed in his footsteps as a pastor, the youngest Hans Georg Nägeli became known as a music publisher and composer.
