Johann Caspar Nägeli

Johann Caspar Nägeli (born September 3, 1696 in Zurich ; † 1742 there ) was a Swiss pastor and agronomist. He was the father of pastor Hans Jakob Nägeli and the grandfather of pastor Hans Konrad Nägeli and the composer Hans Georg Nägeli .

Nägeli studied theology in Zurich and was ordained in 1721. After a few years as a vicariate, he was appointed pastor in Bubikon in 1730 . In 1738 he moved to Fischenthal ; after four years in office he died at the age of 46.

Nägeli was particularly known for his writing Des Lehrnsbegierigen und Andächtigen Landmanns Getreuer Wegweiser (published in Zurich in 1738), which is considered to be an early testimony to the emerging popular enlightenment . The book was reprinted in Stuttgart in 1992.
