Fisher I Government
The Fisher II government was the sixth government of Australia . It was in office from November 13, 1908 to June 2, 1909. It was a minority government consisting only of Labor Party ministers .
Her previous government was a minority government of the Protectionist Party under Prime Minister Alfred Deakin , supported by the Labor Party. In the parliamentary elections in December 1906, the Protectionist Party lost 10 seats and with 16 seats was only the third largest party in the House of Representatives . The Labor Party won three seats and now had 26 seats, but continued to support the Deakin government. In November 1908 there was a dissent over a customs law and the new regulation of pensions, whereupon the Labor Party withdrew its support and formed a minority government under Andrew Fisher . In 1909 the Protectionist Party merged with the Anti-Socialist Party, the former Free Trade Party to form the Commonwealth Liberal Party (CLP), the new party had a majority of the seats in the House of Representatives . After a vote defeat in Parliament on May 27, 1909, Prime Minister Fisher asked the Governor General Earl of Dudley to dissolve Parliament, but the latter refused. The CLP then formed a new government under Prime Minister Deakin.
