Howard II government
The Howard II government ruled Australia from October 21, 1998 to November 26, 2001. It was a coalition government of the Liberal Party (LIB) and the National Party (NPA).
John Howard had been Prime Minister of a coalition of Liberal Party and National Party since March 11, 1996. The parliamentary election on October 3, 1998 brought the Labor Party more votes, won 18 seats and became the strongest party in the House of Representatives with 67 seats . The Liberal Party lost 11 seats and had 64 MPs, The National Party lost 2 seats and had 16 seats. However, the coalition retained an absolute majority. In the Senate , the National Party lost 2 seats, Labor stayed at 29 and the Liberals at 31 Senators. The coalition under Prime Minister Howard continued. In the parliamentary elections on November 10, 2001 , the ruling coalition achieved slight gains. In the House of Representatives, the Liberal Party gained 4 seats and provided 68 members, the National Party lost 3 seats and received 13 seats. With 81 out of 150 seats, the coalition had an absolute majority. In the Senate, the Liberals lost 2 seats and the National Party won 2 seats. With 34 of the 76 senators, the government lacked a majority in the Senate. The governing coalition continued into the next legislative period.
