The 1998 general election in Australia took place on October 3, 1998. It was the election for the 39th Australian Parliament . From the two chambers of parliament , the House of Representatives (lower house) was fully elected and the Senate (upper house) partially re-elected.

Although the ruling coalition of the Liberal Party and the National Party had to accept huge losses of votes, it was still able to continue to govern with an absolute majority. The right-wing populist party One Nation , which was running for the first time in the national parliamentary election, won 8 to 9 percent of the vote from the start.
