The 1996 general election in Australia took place on March 2, 1996. It was the election to the 38th Australian Parliament . From the two chambers of parliament , the House of Representatives (lower house) was fully elected and the Senate (upper house) partially re-elected.

The election winner was the opposition Liberal Party , which from then on could rule with an absolute majority. The ruling Labor Party was the loser of the election with a large loss of votes .
