The Country Liberal Party (CLP) is a liberalist and conservative party in Australia , represented in both the Australian Senate and the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly , the ( lower house ) of the Northern Territory . Although it sees itself as an independent party, it always forms coalitions at the federal level with the conservative and nationalist parties, currently (2019) with the Liberal Party of Australia , the Liberal National Party and the National Party of Australia .

history

The Country Liberal Party was founded in 1974 as a regional party for the Northern Territory. It was the smallest party in the history of Australia that ever formed a government and a party that ruled both in the Commonwealth and in a territory at the same time.

Since it was founded in 1974, the Country Liberal Party has seen itself as an antithesis to the politics of the Labor Party, which before 1974 always ruled the Northern Territory. The Country Liberal Party had a majority in the Northern Territory's lower house until 2001. In the 2005 election she received only four seats and had to give up government power. It was not until 2012 that she was able to win 16 of the 25 seats and again provide the government in the Northern Territory. In 2013, the Chief Minister of the Country Liberal Party was changed internally and Adam Giles , who is of Aboriginal descent, took over the post. This was the first time a person from the indigenous population came from a territory to such a high government office. In the August 2016 election, the Country Liberal Party lost a majority in the Northern Territory's lower house.

Program

The Country Liberal Party is a liberalist and conservative party that advocates individualism and assigns free enterprise the decisive role in economic life. For them everything is considered progressive that can be ascribed to liberalism in social, economic and political life. She also wants the Northern Territory to be given state status.

Alliances

The Country Liberal Party sees itself as an independent party. At the federal level, however, it always forms coalitions with liberalist and nationalist parties. She has been a member of a conservative government coalition in Australia since 2013.

In the general election in May 2019 , Samantha Jane McMahon won a seat for the Country Liberal Party in the Australian Senate and joined a ruling coalition. This ruling coalition currently governs (June 2019) with a government majority of one vote.
