The National Party of Australia ( NPA , translated "National Party of Australia") is a conservative party in Australia . She also appears publicly under the (unofficial) name The Nationals .
It was founded in 1920 as an association of regional smallholder and rural parties and the ranchers as a country party . The ranchers founded and financed the party, pushing it in a conservative direction. In 1975 it changed its name to the National Country Party , and in 1982 it finally took on its current official name. She has been running her campaigns since 2003 under the name The Nationals .
It still has its social base mainly in the rural population away from the big metropolises. In contrast to the Liberal Party of Australia , it represents more social welfare positions, although it distances itself from the Australian Labor Party .
It traditionally participates as a junior partner in governments formed by the Liberal Party. She was also involved in the conservative government of John Howard from 1996 to 2007 and together with her in the opposition from 2007 to 2013. She has been part of the bourgeois coalition government led by Tony Abbott since the 2013 general election .
The current party chairman since March 2018 is Michael McCormack .
In mid-2008, the branch of the National Party and the Liberal Party in the Australian state united Queensland to Liberal National Party .
