The subtle difference: How to become a top soccer player today is a non-fiction book by the former German national soccer player Philipp Lahm from 2011.

Background and content

The book was created with the help of journalist and author Christian Seiler . After a few passages were preprinted in the Bild newspaper , it was published by Antje Kunstmann at the end of August 2011 .

In the book, Lahm looks back on his time as a professional football player at FC Bayern Munich and the German national football team and also critically addresses the role of his coaches Jürgen Klinsmann , Rudi Völler , Felix Magath and Louis van Gaal . He criticizes them and their training methods. National coach Joachim Löw , however, was praised by him.

Commercial win

The book started with an initial edition of 100,000 copies. The book reached number 1 on the Spiegel bestseller list for non-fiction.

criticism

Some of the trainers criticized, such as Felix Magath and Rudi Völler , but also uninvolved third parties such as Mario Basler , Ottmar Hitzfeld , Joachim Löw or Thomas Helmer , publicly defended themselves against the allegations or criticized the book in principle. One of the allegations made was that Lahm, who was still active, had betrayed internal team matters and thus disrupted the relationship of trust with his teammates.
