Howard IV Government
The Howard IV government ruled Australia from October 26, 2004 to December 3, 2007. It was a coalition government of the Liberal Party (LIB) and the National Party (NPA).
John Howard had been Prime Minister of a coalition of Liberal Party and National Party since March 11, 1996. The parliamentary elections on October 9, 2004 brought gains for the governing coalition. In the House of Representatives , the Liberals got 74 seats, the National Party lost one seat to 12 of the 150 seats. In the Senate , the Liberals made up 33 and the National Party made up 5 of the 76 senators. The Howard coalition remained in government. The next parliamentary election on November 24, 2007 ended with a clear victory for the Labor Party , which won 83 of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives. Prime Minister Howard lost his parliamentary seat. Labor won 4 seats in the Senate, but failed to achieve a majority with 32 of 76 Senators. A laboratory government under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd followed .
