Tony Smith (born March 13, 1967 in Melbourne , Australia ) is an Australian politician of the Liberal Party of Australia . He is Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia .

Early life

Smith's father worked as a chemistry teacher and his mother as a secretary. He lived with his family in Box Hill North , an eastern suburb of Melbourne. He attended Kerrimuir Primary School in the same city. He then moved to the Carey Baptist Grammar School in Kew, where his father was a teacher. After graduating from high school, he studied commerce and art at the University of Melbourne . To cover the costs, he worked as a cook in a 24-hour restaurant in Doncaster on the night shift. Smith also worked part-time as a rowing coach and tutor in history.

Career

After graduating, he worked for the Institute of Public Affairs as a political researcher. He was then hired by Treasury Secretary Peter Costello as a media advisor and later as his senior advisor. Smith was elected to Parliament in 2001 in the Casey constituency , Victoria , and has been consistently re-elected since then. Tony serves on several House Committees, including serving on the Science Committee and the Aging Committee. Smith also chaired the Election Committee and the Public Budget and Audit Committee. In January 2007, Smith was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister of the Howard Government. From December 2013 to August 2015, he was Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Chairman of the Economic and Financial Policy Committee of the Coalition Backbench. Tony was elected 30th House Speaker on August 10, 2015, and was re-elected on August 30, 2016. Smith is paid $ 348,320 a year for his position as House Speaker only.

Private

Tony and his wife Pam have lived in Melbourne's eastern suburbs their entire lives and now live with their two sons in the middle of the Casey electorate in Chirnside Park. Tony is a lifelong supporter of Carlton Football Club and shares a love of the game with his boys. He also enjoys restoring classic cars, including his Holden Panel Van .
