Peter Costello

Peter Howard Costello (born August 14, 1957 in Melbourne , Victoria , Australia ) is an Australian politician . He is the longest-serving Treasurer of Australia in Australian history.

Career

Costello received his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Monash University . From 1981 to 1990 he was a lawyer with Mallesons Melbourne and then an independent lawyer. From 1984 to 1986 he was a part-time tutor at the Faculty of Law and the then Faculty of Economics and Politics at Monash University. Costello was first elected to the House of Representatives for the Higgins suburb in 1990 and has been re-elected since 1993, 1996, 1998 and 2001. While in the opposition, he was Shadow Minister for Company Law Reform and Consumer Affairs from 1990-1992 , Shadow Attorney and Shadow Minister for Justice from 1992-1993, Shadow Minister for Finance from 1993-1994 and Shadow Treasurer from 1994-1996. In 2000, Peter chaired the Committee the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Costello has been vice chairman of the Liberal Party of Australia since 1994 and treasurer of the federal government since 1996.

Private

Costello married Tanya Coleman on January 30, 1982. They have three children together.
