Howard III government
The Howard III government ruled Australia from November 26, 2001 to October 26, 2004. It was a coalition government of the Liberal Party (LIB) and the National Party (NPA).
John Howard had been Prime Minister of a coalition of Liberal Party and National Party since March 11, 1996. In the parliamentary elections on November 10, 2001 , the ruling coalition achieved slight gains. In the House of Representatives , the Liberal Party gained 4 seats and provided 68 members, the National Party lost 3 seats and received 13 seats. With 81 out of 150 seats, the coalition had an absolute majority. In the Senate , the Liberals lost 2 seats and the National Party won 2 seats. With 34 of the 76 senators, the government lacked a majority in the Senate. The governing coalition continued into the next legislative period. The parliamentary elections on October 9, 2004 brought gains for the governing coalition. In the House of Representatives, the Liberals got 74 seats, the National Party lost one seat to 12 of the 150 seats. In the Senate, the Liberals made up 33 and the National Party made up 5 of the 76 senators. The Howard coalition remained in government.
