The Lyons I government ruled Australia from January 6, 1932 to November 7, 1938. It was a minority government of the United Australia Party until November 9, 1934 , when the Country Party entered government.

The previous government placed the Labor Party under Prime Minister James Scullin . After a vote defeat in Parliament, Scullin called new elections on December 19, 1931 . The Labor Party suffered a definite defeat and only had 15 seats. The new minority government put the United Australia Party, an association of the Nationalist Party with the resigned Labor MPs, under Prime Minister Joseph Lyons , which held 34 of the 76 parliamentary seats. In the general election on September 15, 1934 , the UAP lost 7 seats and received 27 seats, the Country Party lost 4 seats and received 12 seats. Together they had a majority of the 75 seats. On November 9, 1934, the Country Party entered government. In the general election on October 23, 1937 , the Country held its seats and the United Australia Party won one seat. The successor government was also a coalition of both parties under Prime Minister Lyons.
