Hughes I Government
The Hughes I government was the eleventh government in Australia . She served from October 27, 1915 to November 14, 1916. All members of the government belonged to the Labor Party .
The previous government was also a laboratory government. Prime Minister Andrew Fisher resigned on October 27, 1915 and became High Commissioner in the United Kingdom . He was succeeded as Prime Minister by the previous Attorney General Billy Hughes , who also became chairman of the Labor Party. Australia participated in World War I with volunteer organizations on the British side. The high losses z. B. in Gallipoli and the Battle of the Somme near Pozières could not be balanced by the registration of new volunteers. Prime Minister Hughes advocated the introduction of compulsory military service in Australia against strong opposition in his own party and among those who supported the Labor Party . In a referendum on October 28, 1916, conscription was rejected by a narrow majority. The day before, 3 members of the government had resigned in protest. On November 14th, Hughes and his supporters left the Labor Party and formed a new party, the National Labor Party . This formed a minority government that was supported by the Liberal Party .
