The National Labor Party was a historic political party in Australia that was active at the federal level from November 14, 1916 to February 17, 1917.

Prime Minister Billy Hughes founded the party for himself and his supporters after he and other MPs were expelled from the Australian Labor Party in November 1916 after months of debates on military service during the First World War .

history

On September 15, 1916, Billy Hughes was expelled from the Labor Party by the Political Labor League for advocating conscription in Australia . On November 14th of the same year he was finally banned from the party for good during a party meeting which he and 24 other party members left in anger.

From then on, Hughes and his colleagues formed a minority government as the National Labor Party. In February 1917, the National Labor Party merged with the Commonwealth Liberal Party led by Joseph Cook to form the Nationalist Party of Australia . Although the National Labor Party was supported by a number of trade unionists and formed the government, it was never officially registered as a party in its short existence before being merged into another party.
