Pozières is a French municipality with 266 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes du Pays du Coquelicot .

The village is on the D929 between Albert and Bapaume .

history

During the First World War , the village was completely destroyed. In July 1916, the village was in the middle of the Battle of the Somme , which claimed thousands of victims on all sides, including 5,000 dead from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps . On August 21, 1918, the village was stormed by the 373 Infantry Regiment .

Memorial sites

Today, numerous military cemeteries and memorials remind of the war. In front of the eastern entrance to the village there is a memorial for the Australian units on the D929 on the site of an old windmill, as well as a monument for the armored units used here for the first time. In the village, a café offers a small exhibition on local war events. To the north-west of the village , the Thiepval memorial erected as a large triumphal arch for soldiers of the British and South African army units towers over the landscape on the road to Thiepval .

In honor of the fallen German soldiers, the Thiepval barracks in Tübingen was named after the hamlet of Thiepval. There a stone tablet reminds of the fighting.
