Athies is a French municipality with 594 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France in northern France. The municipality belongs to the canton of Ham and is part of the Est de la Somme municipal association .
geography
The municipality in the Santerre countryside is located on the right bank of the Omignon , a tributary of the Somme , and north of the A29 autoroute with slipway no. 54 from the D937 département road (downgraded N37) in the municipality. In the north, the municipality extends to the D1029 ( Chaussée Brunehaut ). The D45 runs through the community from west to east. The district of Fourques on the left bank of the Omignon belongs to Athies. The field names Les Vignes and Les petites Vignes on the north bank of the Omignon indicate earlier viticulture.
history
The remains of a Gallo-Roman villa have been preserved in Athies . There was a Merovingian palace in the village , the exact location of which is not known. Here was Radegundis , later wife of Clotaire I. , deported.
During the First World War , Athies suffered severe damage at the Battle of Arras , including from the explosions by the miners of the British troops before the attack and the subsequent withdrawal of the German troops. The community was awarded the Croix de guerre 1914-1918.
Attractions
- The Assumption Church (Notre-Dame de l'Assomption) was built in the 12th century. Tower and vault were renewed after the First World War .
- The portal of the Sainte-Radegonde church has been classified as a Monument historique since 1862 .
