history
In the Middle Ages , Nesle was one of the most powerful Vermandois rulers . Since the beginning of the 12th century, the Lords of Nesle were also Burgraves of Bruges in Flanders . The castle was sold to Jean II. De Nesle in 1224 (see also County Nesle ).
In 1141, Renaud III, Count of Soissons , ceded his property to his brother-in-law Ives II of Nesle, making the Lords of Nesle Counts of Soissons. They were able to hold the county until the mid- 14th century .
The family owned the Hôtel de Nesle in Paris on the left bank of the Seine directly opposite the Louvre, with its gardens, which were among the most beautiful in the city, and the Tour de Nesle (around 1200). This tower formed the western end of the southern wall ring. The Quai de Nesle (today Quai de Conti ) was the first fortified part of the river bank (1313).
