Herwig Friesinger

Herwig Friesinger (born March 5, 1942 in Klosterneuburg ) is an Austrian prehistorian .

Life

From 1962 Friesinger studied at the University of Vienna, majoring in Prehistory and Protohistory. In 1969 he received his doctorate , in 1974 he completed his habilitation. Friesinger was appointed full university professor in 1978 and was subsequently director of the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Vienna until 1992.

From 1992 to 1996 he was dean of the humanities faculty at the University of Vienna. Friesinger was elected Secretary of the Phil. Hist. Class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1995 and Secretary General of the Academy in 2003. He is the author of around 100 scientific papers, mainly on the early history of Austria. Friesinger initiated or led numerous planning excavations , for example in Pitten (1967–1971) and in Thunau am Kamp (1965–1990). His main research interests are the archeology of Austria and the early history of Central Europe in cooperation with natural science subjects. He is the founder of aerial archeology in Austria. His local activities also include decades of collaboration with the Krahuletz Society, together with Fritz F. Steininger . Friesinger is the editor of Archaeologia Austriaca and the communications of the Prehistoric Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .
