Voyennes (oldest known form of the name Vienna ) is a French municipality with 603 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France in northern France. It belongs to the canton of Ham and is part of the Est de la Somme municipal association .

geography

The municipality is located on the D89 département road and on the Canal de la Somme near the confluence of the Canal du Nord . The place was the starting point for a slow train that was shut down in 1954. The SNCF's Voyennes-Hombleux station was also closed in 1973.

history

School and Mairie of Voyennes

Finds prove a settlement as early as Gallo-Roman times. In the 10th century the place came under the protection of the Knights Templar . In 1415, Henry V of England crossed the Somme here after the Battle of Azincourt . During the First World War the community was badly destroyed.

economy

Commercial port and slow train, early 20th century

Voyennes still had an important horticulture at the beginning of the 20th century. Most of the goods were transported over the Canal de la Somme, which was completed in 1827.

Saint-Etienne church

The Romanesque building was completely destroyed in the First and Second World Wars . The modern church has a bas-relief of the old church.
