Villers-Carbonnel is a French municipality with 366 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France in northern France. The municipality belongs to the canton of Péronne and is part of the Communauté de communes de la Haute Somme .
geography
The municipality is located at the intersection of the D1029 (part of the Chaussée Brunehaut ) and D1017 (former National Road 17) road, 8.5 km southwest of Péronne . The valley of the Somme limits the municipality to the east. The ponds of the upper Somme in the municipality are known for their eel stocks . The hamlets of Pont-les-Brie and Horgny belong to the municipality.
The railway line from Saint-Just-en-Chaussée to Douai via Chaulnes and Péronne runs through Villers-Carbonnel, which is no longer used for passenger transport .
history
A Neolithic settlement was excavated in La Sole d'Happlincourt . A Neolithic statuette (the Lady of Villers-Carbonnel ) was discovered.
The highly decorated German aviator Kurt Wintgens was killed in an aerial battle near Villers-Carbonnel in 1916 .
Attractions
- On the Somme are the ruins of Happlaincourt Castle from the 13th century, which was destroyed during the First World War in the Battle of the Somme . The ruins have been inscribed on the list of Monuments historiques since 1926 .
- The Saint-Quentin church has abstract glass windows based on a design by Pierre Dmitrienko (1925–1974).
- Distillery, later chemical factory.
- On the Chaussée Brunehaut there is a military cemetery (Nécropole nationale).
