history

The remains of a Gallo-Roman villa have been found in the area of Vauvillers.

The first battle of the First World War took place at Vermandovillers on September 24, 1914. The Battle of Vermandovillers followed from September 4 to 9, 1916. The village of Vermandovillers was about 200 m east of the 1st trench line of the German army and was held by units of the 11th Infantry Division . The second line of the ditch was near the village of Ablaincourt. Between autumn 1914 and the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, the Germans had secured the line with concrete shelters with machine guns.

The Battle of Vermandovillers began on September 4, 1916 with an attack by the French 132nd Division from Bois Étoilé northeast of the village, which remained in the defensive fire of the Germans. The German positions were defended by the Grenadier Regiment 10, the Fusilier Regiment 38 and the Infantry Regiment 51. From September 6, 1916, units of other French divisions, the 13th, 43rd and 51st, were used. The French units suffered heavy losses, three of the brigades deployed lost a total of around 4,200 men. On September 9, 1916, this attack was ended for lack of soldiers. This was followed by continued violent artillery duels and exploratory attacks from the trench sections of the French troops.

On September 17, 1916 another attack attempt was started, which was brought forward by the French 86th Infantry Regiment. The attack was prepared by heavy artillery fire of heavy caliber that practically pulverized the Vermandovillers. Furthermore, the front trench lines were constantly occupied by fighter planes with machine gun fire and bombs. The Germans had withheld their artillery and did not use them heavily until the French attack began. The artillery preparations had not been able to eliminate the German machine-gun positions. The attack was carried out with heavy French losses. The German troops were driven out of the village and held positions on the eastern edge of the village on Bois Kalner.

The village was destroyed in the fighting. It was not fully taken until October 11, 1916.

The community received the Croix de guerre 1914-1918 as an award .
