Bernd Oldenkott

Bernd Adrian Oldenkott (born September 22, 1925 in Dortmund ) is a former German diplomat who was ambassador to Nigeria between 1979 and 1984 , ambassador to Ethiopia from 1984 to 1988 and, most recently, ambassador to Thailand between 1988 and 1990 .

Life

Oldenkott, grandson of tobacco manufacturer Jacob Bernhard Oldenkott and son of tobacco manufacturer Paul Oldenkott and his wife Annemarie von Guérard (daughter of Theodor von Guérard ) grew up in Ahaus (Westphalia) . His brother Paul Theodor is a well-known neurosurgeon. After graduating from high school in 1943, he did Reich labor service and military service during the Second World War . In 1944 he was transferred to the Eastern Front and last promoted to lieutenant in 1945 before he was finally taken prisoner of war . After his release he began to study law at the University of Cologne in 1947 . In 1947 he joined the Catholic student union AV Rheinstein Cologne. After taking the first state examination in 1951 and the second state examination in 1954, he worked as a lawyer in Ahaus between 1954 and 1955 .

In 1955, Oldenkott joined the Foreign Service and in 1957 passed the diplomatic-consular final examination for the higher foreign service. He was then vice-consul at the consulate in Houston between 1957 and 1959 and legation counselor at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn from 1959 to 1962 . After serving as first secretary at the embassy in India between 1962 and 1967 , he was a lecturer in the Foreign Office from 1967 to 1971 and counselor in Indonesia between 1971 and 1974 . After his return, he worked from 1974 to 1979 as head of the foreign affairs department of the Federal Chancellery in Bonn.

In 1979, Oldenkott took over his first ambassadorial post as the successor to Heinz Dröge and served as ambassador to Nigeria until Jürgen von Alten replaced him in 1984 . He then succeeded Rüdiger von Pachelbel ambassador in Ethiopia in 1984 and remained in this post until 1988, when Kurt Stöckel succeeded him there. Most recently, in 1988, Oldenkott took over from Helmut Rückriegel as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Thailand . He held this position until he retired in 1990 and was then replaced by Berthold von Pfetten-Arnbach .

His marriage to Anita Mueller on May 16, 1957 resulted in three children.
