Jacob Bernhard Oldenkott (born November 19, 1853 House Sonderhaus in Ahaus ; † July 21, 1926 in Ahaus Castle ) was a German tobacco manufacturer.

Life

The son of the couple Theodorus Franciscus Oldenkott and Maria Anna Triep, Bernardus Oldenkott came from the Dutch industrialist family Oldemkott . He was the second oldest son and had thirteen siblings, seven of whom died before they were three. Theodorus Franciscus Oldenkott built the parental home “Haus Sonderhaus” in 1849 and sold it in 1858 to District Administrator Julius von Hülst . It served as a residence for many district administrators, most recently Friedrich Freiherr von Schorlemer-Alst , who bought it in 1880. In 1880 Jacob Bernhard took over the Amsterdam tobacco company. His father called him back to Ahaus in 1887 and made him head of the Ahaus company. He built large tobacco stores in Xanthi (Bulgaria), Izmir and Sason (Turkey) and in 1895 expanded the company to include an additional cigar factory. In 1911 he founded a branch cigar factory in Saulgau , which he passed on to his son Paul . In 1883 he married Maria Theresia Hüesker in Gescher. The marriage had fourteen children.

Honor

In 1953, in recognition of the services of the Oldenkott family, the Ahaus City Council renamed the “Freedom of the Palace” in front of Schloss Ahaus to “Bernadus-Oldenkott-Platz”. In 1972 this square was named "Oldenkottplatz".
