Guillemont (Picard: Djilmont) is a French municipality with 137 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France in northern France. The municipality belongs to the canton of Péronne .

geography

The municipality is located in Santerre around three kilometers west of Combles on the D64 departmental road on the Circuit du Souvenir, which commemorates the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

The fighting for Guillemont in World War I is described in the book In Stahlgewittern by Ernst Jünger .

The community received the Croix de guerre 1914-1918 as an award .

  • Monument for the 16th Irish Division at the exit towards Combles in the form of a Celtic cross with a clover leaf and a Gaelic dedication.
  • Monument to the 20th British Division (20th Light Division).
  • Monument to the famous soldiers of the 265th Infantry Regiment for the French soldiers who fell in the summer of 1914.
  • Guillemont Road Cemetery between Montauban-de-Picardie and Guillemont, burial place predominantly for British soldiers, built after the Battle of Guillemont (1916). Buried here are the son of British Prime Minister Herbert Asquith and the poet Edward Wyndham Tennant .
