history

Front line in Beaumont-Hamel on July 1, 1916

The community was on the front line several times during the First World War . In July 1916 it formed a cornerstone of the German lines during the Battle of the Somme .

British troops undermined the German position on the British side so named Hawthorn Ridge; The demolition produced a large mine crater (on the municipal boundary of Auchonvillers ). At the end of the war, almost nothing of the parish was upright. The municipality was in the rouge zone and reconstruction took a long time. The community received the Croix de guerre 1914-1918 as an award .

On June 25, 1921, the last four cars of an express train derailed at Beaumont-Hamel , which was on the Paris – Lille line from Lille to Paris , and fell off an embankment. 25 people died and 60 were also injured.
