Beaumont-Hamel ( Picard : Bieumont-Hamé) is a northern French municipality with 215 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality belongs to the canton of Albert and is part of the Communauté de communes du Pays du Coquelicot .
geography
The community lies on the right bank of the river Ancre , where the hamlets of Hamel (in the south) and La Gare de Beaumont-Hamel are located. The D50 département road and the Paris – Lille railway line run along the Ancre . The former train station no longer exists. The Beaumont district lies in a side valley. The municipal area extends in the north to the D919 département road. There are numerous military cemeteries and several memorials to the fighting in the Battle of the Somme in the municipality .
history
The community was on the front line several times during the First World War . In July 1916 it formed a cornerstone of the German lines during the Battle of the Somme .
British troops undermined the German position on the British side so named Hawthorn Ridge; The demolition produced a large mine crater (on the municipal boundary of Auchonvillers ). At the end of the war, almost nothing of the parish was upright. The municipality was in the rouge zone and reconstruction took a long time. The community received the Croix de guerre 1914-1918 as an award .
On June 25, 1921, the last four cars of an express train derailed at Beaumont-Hamel , which was on the Paris – Lille line from Lille to Paris , and fell off an embankment. 25 people died and 60 were also injured.
