Hughes III government

The Hughes III government was the thirteenth government of Australia . She served from February 17, 1917 to January 10, 1918. All members of the government belonged to the National Party of Australia .

The previous government was a minority government of the National Labor Party (NLP) - a split of the Labor Party's conscription supporters - under Prime Minister Billy Hughes , which was supported by the Liberal Party (LP). In February 1917, the NLP and LP merged to form the Nationalist Party of Australia , which was the third Hughes government. In the parliamentary elections in May 1917 , the Nationalist Party won an absolute majority in the House and Senate . On December 20, 1917, as in October 1916, another referendum took place on the introduction of conscription. The majority against conscription was even larger than in the first vote. Prime Minister Hughes resigned on January 8, as promised before the vote in the event of defeat, but remained chairman of the Nationalist Party. Governor-General Ronald Munro-Ferguson then instructed Hughes again to form a government.
