Howard I government

The Howard I government ruled Australia from March 11, 1996 to October 21, 1998. It was a coalition government of the Liberal Party (LIB) and the National Party (NPA).

Paul Keating had been Prime Minister of a Laboratory Government since December 20, 1991. In the parliamentary elections on March 2, 1996 , the Labor Party suffered a significant defeat, it received only 49 of 148 seats in the House of Representatives , the Liberal Party won 75 seats, the National Party 18 seats. In the Senate Labor lost one seat, the Liberal Party won a seat. The next government was a coalition of the Liberal Party and National Party under Prime Minister John Howard . The parliamentary election on October 3, 1998 brought the Labor Party more votes, won 18 seats and became the strongest party in the House of Representatives with 67 seats. The Liberal Party lost 11 seats and had 64 MPs, The National Party lost 2 seats and had 16 seats. However, the coalition retained an absolute majority. In the Senate, the National Party lost 2 seats, Labor stayed at 29 and the Liberals at 31 Senators. The coalition under Prime Minister Howard continued.
