Bronwyn Bishop
Bronwyn Kathleen Bishop (born October 19, 1942 in Sydney ) is an Australian politician of the Liberal Party of Australia and a member of the Australian House of Representatives .
Bishop was elected Senator for New South Wales in 1987 and 1990 and was thereby a member of the Australian Senate . In 1994 she resigned as Senator to run for Jim Carlton's successor in the House of Representatives . In March 1994 she won the Mackellar by-election and entered the House of Representatives. After the Liberal Party's victory in the general election in 1996 , she became a member of the government of John Howard , initially as Minister for Defense Industry, Science and Personnel , from 1998 as Minister for Aged Care . After two legislative terms, she lost her ministerial post in 2001.
After trying unsuccessfully to become Speaker of the House in 2005 , Bishop was nominated by Tony Abbott for this office in 2013. On November 12, 2013, she was elected spokeswoman. During her time as a spokesperson, she was accused of not exercising her office neutrally. On August 2, 2015, after a controversy over the use of parliamentary funds for party purposes, she announced her resignation as spokeswoman, but retained her mandate in the House of Representatives.
