Jim Carlton

James Joseph "Jim" Carlton AO (born May 13, 1935 in Sydney , † December 25, 2015 ) was an Australian politician of the Liberal Party .

Carlton was already politically active during his studies at the University of Sydney . In 1971 he became general secretary of the Liberal Party in New South Wales . Carlton was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as a MP for Mackellar in 1977. In 1982 he was appointed Minister of Health in the government of Malcolm Fraser to succeed Peter Baume . After the Liberal Party's defeat in the 1983 election , he lost that office again. He remained a member of the House of Representatives and was a member of several shadow cabinets . In 1994 he resigned from his mandate.

After retiring from politics, Carlton was Secretary General of the Australian Red Cross from 1994 to 2001 . Among other things, he was committed to the introduction of a national blood donation service . In 2001 he was accepted as an officer in the Order of Australia . In 2007 he was awarded the Henry Dunant Medal for his work at the Red Cross .
