The mountain night swallow ( Antrostomus saturatus , syn .: Caprimulgus saturatus ), is a species of bird from the family of the night swallow (Caprimulgidae).

It occurs in the subtropical or tropical humid mountain forest in Costa Rica in western Panama , especially in the Cordillera de Tilarán above 1500 m and the Cordillera de Talamanca from 1800 m as well as in the province of Chiriquí .

Their distribution area mainly includes mountain forests , secondary forests and plateaus overgrown with trees and thickets , preferably at the edges of the forest.

The nightjar is 21-25 cm tall, the male weighs about 53, the female about 51 g. It is a dark colored night swallow, not very structured with white tips on the outer control feathers in the male, yellow-brown in the female. In flight, the White missing on the primaries . The mountain nightjar can be confused with the rusty nightjar ( Antrostomus rufus ) and the very rare black-throated nightjar ( Antrostomus vociferus ).

The call of the male is described as an indistinct “whEE-per-ehEE” with a slightly rising tone sequence.

Way of life

The diet consists of moths and beetles . It hunts from low hides on the edges of the forest and in clearings .

The breeding season is between February and April. Nests are made in clearings with individual trees, often in tall grass.

Hazardous situation

The night swallow is not considered to be endangered ( least concern ).
