The black-throated nightjar ( Antrostomus vociferus ), syn. ( Caprimulgus vociferus ), is a species of bird from the nightjar family (Caprimulgidae).
It occurs in southern Canada and in the east of the USA , winters in the southeast of the USA via Mexico to Cuba and Panama .
Their distribution area includes all types of forest and open tree-lined areas, including oaks and / or pines up to 1200 m.
The species used to be conspecific with the Puerto Rican nightjar ( Antrostomus noctitherus ) and until recently with the Mexico nightjar ( Antrostomus arizonae ).

The black-throated nightjar is 22–27 cm tall, the male weighs between 43 and 63 g, the female between 44 and 61 g. The top is striped gray-brown black-brown. Stripes. It has a narrow white stripe under the throat. Only in the male is white in the tail on the outside of the three outer control feathers .
The black Kehl-Nachtschwalbe is similar to the grate Eight Schwalbe ( Antrostomus rufus ) and the Carolina Eight Schwalbe ( Antrostomus carolinensis ), but is gray colored with a dark hatching at the vertex.

The call of the male is described as a whistled “whip, pr-will” or “whip, pr-weeea”, called at night from a raised hide such as a branch or a rock.
Way of life
The diet consists of moths , beetles , crickets , grasshoppers , mosquitoes , caddis flies , locusts , ants and worms .
The breeding season is between May and July.
