The nightjar ( Antrostomus rufus , syn .: Caprimulgus rufus ) is a species of bird from the family of the night swallow (Caprimulgidae).

It occurs in Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil , Costa Rica , Ecuador , French Guiana , Guyana , Colombia , Panama , Paraguay , Peru , St. Lucia , Suriname , Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela .

Their distribution area includes subtropical or tropical dry forest , moist lowland forest, forest edges and thickets up to 1000 m.

description

The night swallow is 25–30 cm tall, the male weighs around 88 g, the female between 87 and 98 g. The top is marbled brown with broad black-brown stripes. It has a light brown neck band and a wide white stripe on the throat. Only in the male is white in the tail on the outside of the three outer control feathers , there is no white on the wings of the hand . The parting is red-brown. The Rostnachtschwalbe is similar to the black-throated nightjar ( Antrostomus vociferus ) and the Carolinan nightjar ( Antrostomus carolinensis ).

The male's call is described as a loud “chuk, wee, wee, weeo”, called out at night from a raised hide such as a branch or a rock

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • A. r. minimus ( Griscom & Greenway , 1937) - Ruddy Nightjar - southern Costa Rica to northern Colombia, Venezuela and northwest Trinidad (including Bocas Islands ).
  • A. r. Otiosus Bangs , 1911 - St Lucia Nightjar - Northeast St Lucia, in the Lesser Antilles .
  • A. r. rufus ( Boddaert , 1783) - Rufous Nightjar , nominate form - South of Venezuela, east to Guiana and Brazil.
  • A. r. rutilus Burmeister , 1856 - southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and northeast Argentina.

A. r. saltuarius ( Olrog , 1979) from northwest Argentina and possibly southeast Bolivia is used as a synonym for A. r. rutilus considered.

Way of life

The food consists of insects .

The breeding season is between January and May in Panama, in June in St Lucia, between February and May in Trinidad, between April and May in Colombia.

Hazardous situation

The rust nightjar is not considered endangered ( least concern ).
