Hughes II government

The Hughes II government was the twelfth government in Australia . She served from November 14, 1916 to February 17, 1917. All members of the government belonged to the National Labor Party .

The previous government was a Labor government under Prime Minister Billy Hughes . Australia participated in World War I with volunteer organizations on the British side. The high losses z. B. in Gallipoli and the Battle of the Somme near Pozières could not be balanced by the registration of new volunteers. Prime Minister Hughes advocated the introduction of compulsory military service, despite strong opposition in his own party and in the unions supporting the Labor Party. In a referendum on October 28, 1916, conscription was rejected by a narrow majority. The day before, 3 members of the government had resigned in protest. On November 14th, Hughes and his supporters left the Labor Party and formed a new party, the National Labor Party (NLP). Hughes remained Prime Minister and formed a minority government of the NLP, which was supported by the Liberal Party (LP). In February 1917, the NLP and LP merged to form the Nationalist Party of Australia , which was the third Hughes government.
