Brendan John Nelson (born August 19, 1958 in Melbourne ) is an Australian politician of the conservative Liberal Party of Australia . He was Minister of Education, Science and Training from November 23, 2001 to January 26, 2006 and Secretary of Defense of Australia until the end of 2007.

Life path

Brendan Nelson attended school in Adelaide , where he began studying economics at Flinders University , but soon switched to medicine. He practiced as a general practitioner in Hobart , Tasmania . From 1990 to 1992 he was national chairman of the medical association, the Australian Medical Association, for two years, of which he was national chairman from 1993 to 1995. Nelson, who was also a member of the Australian Labor Party for a few years from 1988 , first moved into the federal parliament in Canberra on March 2, 1996 as a member of the Bradfield constituency in the north of Sydney.

Opposition leader

After the electoral defeat of John Howard on November 24, 2007, Nelson was succeeded as parliamentary leader on November 29, 2007 in a vote against former Environment Secretary Malcolm Turnbull , a former trade banker who represents a constituency in east Sydney in Parliament Elected to the Liberal Party, 12th Liberal Leader and 30th Opposition Leader in Australian history.

Due to his public unpopularity, he was replaced on September 16, 2008 as party leader of the Liberal Party by Malcolm Turnbull .

Private

Brendan Nelson is married for the third time and has three children. In 1995 his brother died of AIDS.
