Wilhelm Mauser (born May 2, 1834 in Oberndorf am Neckar ; † January 13, 1882 there ) was a German weapons designer and entrepreneur in the arms industry .

Life

As the son of a worker at the Royal Rifle Factory in Oberndorf , Wilhelm Mauser had also worked there since 1848. Together with his brother Peter-Paul Mauser , he designed a breech- loading gun breech that was added to the arsenal's model collection by the Württemberg Ministry of War in 1860 . 1867–1869 the brothers had a contract with Samuel Norris, the European representative of the American arms manufacturer Remington, and stayed in Liège - here they worked on various projects, such as the introduction of a rifle they had developed - breech for Bavaria and the Netherlands .

In 1870 they returned to Oberndorf, continued their development work for the Prussian military authorities and developed the Mauser rifle model 71 with them , which was introduced in 1871. 1872 founded Mauser and his brother, the company Brothers Wilhelm and Paul Mauser , 1874 bought the Royal gun factory and transformed their company into a limited partnership under the firm Gebr. Mauser & Cie. around.

Wilhelm-Mauser-Strasse in Cologne-Bickendorf is named after him.
