Wolfgang Seel (University Chancellor)

Wolfgang Seel (born December 3, 1915 in Breslau ; † May 4, 2008 in Langenfeld-Richrath ) was a German lawyer and civil servant. He was the first university chancellor of the Ruhr University Bochum .

biography

After Seel graduated from high school in his hometown in 1935 , he began to study law at the University of Breslau in the winter semester of 1938/39 . He was drafted during World War II and was captured by Canada in 1941. After his release, he finished 1947 his studies at the University of Cologne , where he in December 1950, the comparative writing The House of Lords in the UK and the Senate in the United States of America: The influence of the second chamber as an element of quality doctorate .

In 1951 he received a position in the university department of the Ministry of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia . In July 1963 he was appointed the first chancellor of the newly founded Ruhr University Bochum. In 1981, Seel finally retired.

In 1980 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Law Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum, and in 1981 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 2001 the Wolfgang Seel Foundation was established in his honor by Alois Haas and Knut Ipsen at the Ruhr University. The foundation has been awarding prizes every year since 2002 to outstanding graduates of teacher training courses in order to support them with their doctorate.

In 1939 he married Eleonore Schwarzer. He has four children.
