Hitendra Kanaiyalal Desai ( Gujarati : હિતેન્દ્ર દેસાઈ * 9. August 1915 in Surat , today Gujarat ; † 12. September 1993 ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), among others 1965-1971 Chief Minister of Gujarat and From 1976 to 1977, Indira Gandhi was Union Minister for Minister for Public Works and Housing in the second cabinet . He was also a member of the Lok Sabha , the First Chamber of the Indian Parliament (Bhāratīya Saṃsad) between 1977 and 1980 .

Life

Desai, son of Shri Kanaiyalal Desai, began his political commitment in the early 1930s at the age of fifteen after attending MTB College in Surat and supported Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in the struggle for India's independence . He took part in Gandhi's Salt March and began an undergraduate degree at the University of Bombay , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). Because of his grades in economics , he was awarded the Cobden Club Medal . A postgraduate studies of law at the University of Bombay closed it with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from. Because of his participation in the Quit India movement , he was imprisoned from 1941 to 1942. He then worked as a lawyer .

In 1957 Desai was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Bombay for the Indian National Congress (INC) , of which he was a member until 1960. After the division of the state of Bombay into the newly formed states of Gujarat and Maharashtra on May 1, 1960, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat between 1960 and 1971. At the same time he was appointed to the government of the state by the first Chief Minister of Gujarat Jivraj Mehta and also held numerous ministerial posts under his successor Balwantrai Mehta until 1965, such as Minister of the Interior, Education, Social Welfare, Law and Legislation, Agriculture, Forestry and Prohibition.

After Chief Minister Balwantrai Mehta was killed on September 19, 1965 when his plane was shot down by the Pakistani Air Force over the Kachchh district in the Indian-Pakistani border region, Desai was replaced by President S. Radhakrishnan on September 1, after a temporary presidential rule ( President's rule ) October 1965 Chief Minister of Gujarat and held this office until May 12, 1971. Then again between May 13, 1971 and August 16, 1972 there was a presidential government of the current President VV Giri , before Ganshyam Bhai Oza became the new Chief Minister of the state on August 17, 1972. During his tenure as Chief Minister, bloody riots between Hindus and Muslims broke out in Gujarat between September and October 1969 , killing 512 people and injuring another 1,084 people.

As the successor to Kotha Raghuramaiah , Desai was appointed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as Minister of Public Works and Housing in her second cabinet on December 23, 1976 , to which he was a member until the end of Gandhi's term on March 24, 1977. In the parliamentary elections from March 16 to 20, 1977 he was elected to the INC as a member of the Lok Sabha , the First Chamber of the Indian Parliament (Bhāratīya Saṃsad) . There he represented the constituency of Gujarat-Godhra until the election on January 3 and 6, 1980 . During his parliamentary membership, he was a member of the Lok Sabha Committees on Public Enterprises and Privilege.

Desai had been married to Shrimati Sagunaben since 1954.
