The Dommuseum Ottonianum Magdeburg (DOMA) is a museum in Magdeburg that opened in November 2018 .

History and focus

Unlike other cathedral cities, Magdeburg did not have a cathedral museum . It was not until the extensive cathedral excavations between 2001 and 2010 that the idea of presenting the excavation results on a permanent basis emerged. In 2010 the Magdeburg City Council decided to set up the museum.

The main themes of the museum are: Emperor Otto the Great (912–973) with Queen Edgitha (910–946), the Archdiocese of Magdeburg and the archaeological research in and around the cathedral.

building

The location is the listed building of the Alte Reichsbank on Breite Weg opposite the towers of Magdeburg Cathedral . The monumental building was built for the Reichsbank from 1921 to 1923 according to plans by the architect Philipp Nitze in neoclassical style and opened on April 23, 1923. It survived the Second World War and in particular the air raid on Magdeburg on January 16, 1945, relatively unscathed. Later the state bank of the GDR was here and until the mid-1990s the branch of the Deutsche Bundesbank . The building belongs to the Magdeburg housing association , which also has its headquarters here.

carrier

The museum is a cooperation project between the state capital Magdeburg, the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation and the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt . The opening took place on November 4, 2018.
