The Indian Union Muslim League ( IUML ; Malayalam ഇന്ത്യൻ യൂണിയൻ മുസ്ലിം ലീഗ് , Urdu انڈین یونین مسلم لیگ, Tamil இந்திய ஒன்றிய முஸ்லிம் லீக் ; "Muslim League of the Indian Union"), short Muslim League ( MUL , "Muslim League"), is a Muslim regional party with a focus on the southern Indian state of Kerala .

Party history

The government of Kerala with Chief Minister Mohammed Koya 1979

The IUML was founded on March 10, 1948 in Madras (today's Chennai ) about a year after the division of British India into the Muslim state of Pakistan and predominantly Hindu India. In contrast to the All India Muslim League ( All-India Muslim League ) under Muhammad Ali Jinnah and his successors made entirely focused on the creation of the new state of Pakistan, the iuml known to participate in the newly founded state of India.

From 1952 to the present (as of 2014), the IUML has been represented without interruption with members in the all- India parliament, the Lok Sabha . In addition, shortly after the establishment of the state of Kerala in the States Reorganization Act of 1956, she was continuously represented in the regional parliament there from 1960 and sent several ministers to the coalition governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu . In 1979 she even appointed CH Mohammed Koya as Chief Minister of Kerala for a few months . In the 1970s she was involved in some coalition governments in West Bengal . IUML representatives were also occasionally elected to the regional parliaments of Puducherry , Maharashtra , Karnataka , Uttar Pradesh , West Bengal and Assam . The party is also active at the local level. Politically, the IUML has been allied with the Congress Party for a long time , from 2004 within the framework of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). She was a coalition partner in the two governments under Manmohan Singh from 2004–2009 and 2009–2014 . The main political opponents are the Hindu nationalist parties, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as well as the traditionally strong communist parties in South India.

In terms of content, the IUML sees itself as a representative of the interests of the Muslim population. However, it does not represent political Islam and is not an Islamist party, but sees itself as a secular party. It is expressly committed to the Indian state and, according to the party program, strives to promote mutual understanding and harmony between Muslims and all other social groups in India.
