Ramanathapuram ( Tamil : இராமநாதபுரம் Irāmanātapuram [ (ɨ) ˈɾaːmənaːd̪əpuɾʌm ], formerly Anglicized Ramnad ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in the south of Tamil Nadu about 440 km south of the capital Chennai not far from the coast of the Bay of Bengal . Ramanathapuram is the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The population is around 61,000 (2011 census).

The name Ramanathapuram means "City of the Lord of Rama" and refers to the god Shiva , who is worshiped together with the god Rama in nearby Rameswaram . According to the myth, Rama is said to have moved to Sri Lanka over the Adam Bridge here . Raghunatha Kilavan (1673-1708), one of the local princes who ruled the region with the title Setupati , moved his capital from nearby Pogalur to Ramanathapuram and had the city fortified. In 1795 the British removed the Setupati Muthuramalinga of his office and placed Ramanathapuram under the administration of British India , but appointed his sister's heirs as zamindars (landlords). The Zamindari system was abolished in 1892, but the Palace of Ramanathapuram is still owned by the Setupati family.

76 percent of the residents of Ramanathapuram are Hindus , 20 percent are Muslims and 3 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 98 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
