Rashtriya Janata Dal ( Hindi राष्ट्रीय जनता दल rāṣṭrīya janatā dal , "National People's Party", RJD ) is a political party in India , which is based in the state of Bihar . The party was founded on July 5, 1997 by Lalu Prasad Yadav , the former leader of the Janata Dal , after he was expelled from the Janata Dal on charges of corruption. The followers of the Rashtriya Janata Dal are mainly recruited from members of lower castes and Muslims, both of whom are comparatively large in number in Bihar. Ideologically, the RJD advocates social justice with a socialist orientation, equality and a secular social order. Hindu and Muslim nationalism are rejected.

Previous election results

In the Indian general election in 1998 , the RJD won 17 constituencies in Bihar state. Outside of Bihar it was unsuccessful. As a result, the RJD entered into an electoral alliance with the Samajwadi Party , but lost 10 seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 1999 Indian parliamentary election . In the election to the regional parliament of Bihar in 2000, it became the strongest party and held the government there until 2005.

In the 2004 Indian general election , the RJD formed an alliance with the Congress Party as part of the United Progressive Alliance and won 22 of the 40 constituencies of Bihar, as well as 2 more in Jharkhand . In the Indian parliamentary election in 2009 , as part of the so-called Fourth Front , an alliance of left-wing parties, it was only able to win 4 constituencies. In the Indian general election in 2014 , the RJD rejoined the party alliance of the United Progressive Alliance, and won four constituencies in Bihar. Between 2015 and July 2017, the RJD in Bihar participated in a coalition government (together with the Janata Dal (United) and the Congress Party) ( "grand alliance" , Mahagathbandhan ).
