Jharkhand Mukti Morcha
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha ( JMM , Hindi झारखंड मुक्ति मोर्चा , "Jharkhand Liberation Front") is a regional party in the state of Jharkhand in India .
Party history
The party emerged in the context of the regionalist movements in the area of what is now the Indian state of Jharkhand. For a long time there was a special regional awareness in Jharkhand. The British colonial rulers encountered long-lasting resistance from the local population here. One last major uprising occurred in the years before 1900, when members of the Munda tribe, led by Birsa Munda, rose up against British rule. After India gained independence in 1947, Jharkhand became administratively part of Bihar State . However, local resistance arose and the demand for a separate state of Jharkhand was loud. The Jharkhand Party tried to enforce this goal in a lawful, ie parliamentary way.
After the all- India parliamentary elections in 1967 , which were unfavorable for them , however, due to differences within the party, they split into many different, politically largely uninfluential splinter groups. One of them was the Shibu Soren- run Bihar Progressive Hul Jharkhand Party . On November 19, 1972 (Birsa Munda's 97th birthday), Shibu Soren formed a new party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Soren knew how to win supporters from different castes as well as from the industrial workers in Jharkhand and, together with other political supporters, to channel the fragmentation of the pro-Jharkhand movement. Ultimately, the movement to create its own state, Jharkhand, was successful and on November 15, 2000, it became the 28th state in India.
In the regional elections in Jharkhand 2005, the JMM won 17 of the 81 constituencies, making it the second strongest party. The party chairman is Shibu Soren to this day . In the run-up to the all-Indian election in 2014, the JMM gained inglorious notoriety when it became known that criminal proceedings were pending against both of the two JMM MPs in the Lok Sabha . Both (including the party chairman Shibu Soren) are accused, among other things, of murder or attempted murder.
Between 2004 and 2014, JMM was a member of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by the Congress party . In October 2014, JMM left this alliance because no agreement could be reached on constituency agreements in Jharkhand.
In the 2014 all-India parliamentary election , JMM won 2 of Jharkhand's 14 constituencies.
