Chhabi Biswas

Chhabi Biswas ( Bengali ছবি বিশ্বাস Chabi Biśbās ; real name Sachindranath Biswas ; * July 12, 1900 in Kolkata ; † June 11, 1962 ibid) was an Indian theater and film actor.

Chhabi Biswas was born into an aristocratic Bengali family. He became interested in the theater from an early age and was known to many actors of his time (including Sisir Bhaduri , Durgadas Bannerjee , Ahindra Choudhury , Jahar Ganguly ). So he finally began to work in the theater and in film; In 1938 his professional stage career began. He played leading roles in the plays Devdas , Kashinath and Siraj-ud-Doula .

He made his film debut in 1936 in Annapurnar Mandir , in which he played a leading role alongside Jiban Bose and Manorama . Lasting fame he achieved with his roles as impoverished aristocratic country lessor with obsession for classical Indian music in Satyajit Ray Jalsaghar (1958), as (but) a believing father-in Devi (1960) and in Kanchenjungha (1962), where he served as family patriarch in Darjeeling his youngest daughter wants to marry off an NRI business man. Equally noteworthy are his leading roles in Ajoy Kars Saptapadi (1962), in Tapan Sinhas Kabuliwala (1957) and as Dada Thakur (1962). On stage and in film he was best cast and popular with the audience in aristocratic roles. Chhabi Biswas starred in more than 100 films. He died in a traffic accident.

Biswas received a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1960 .
