(1872) Helenos was discovered on March 24, 1971 by the research team of Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels .
The asteroid was named after Helenos , son of Priam , a legendary figure of the Trojan War.
