Palais des Festivals et des Congrès

The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès ( German: Festival- und Kongresspalast ) is a building complex in Cannes , France , in which events of regional, national and international character take place all year round. These include, in particular, the Cannes International Film Festival . The Palais offers up to 35,000 m² of event space.

History of the old casino

None of the eight casino projects that were developed from 1899 onwards were unsuccessful - all of them failed because of the resistance of Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich Romanov , who was concerned about public morale. Finally, on April 5th, the city council awarded the concession to Henri Ruhl , director of the Paris hotel Scribe . The casino, built according to plans by the architect Camille Mari , was inaugurated on January 28, 1907 in the presence of the Grand Duke. It was enlarged in 1919 and modernized in 1930 by the architect Roger Séassal ( Nice ). The old casino was replaced by the new Palais in 1979.

history

The old Palais des Festivals

The creation of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes is linked to the film festival: since there was no more suitable location, the first festival took place from September 20 to October 5, 1946 in the old casino. The city council therefore decided to build a festival building on the Promenade de la Croisette . In 1949 the first palace, also known as the Palais Croisette, was inaugurated. The old building no longer exists: it has been replaced by a hotel belonging to the Hilton Hotels and the Palais Stéphanie .

Due to the great success of the film festival and the tourist developments as well as the first trade fairs (Reed MIPTV from 1965), the city of Cannes decided in 1979 to build a new palace near the old port. In 1982 the building, which was designed by architects Sir Hubert Bennett ( London ) and François Druet ( Biot ), was inaugurated. In 1999 it was expanded by 10,000 m², called Espace Riviera (Riviera area). The building complex thus currently offers 35,000 m² of event space in different halls and auditoriums. The building has been on the list of architectural monuments since 2001.
