from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Berlin Jazz Prize has been awarded annually since 2017 by the State of Berlin and Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb). The award, endowed with 15,000 euros, will be presented at a public concert in the small broadcasting hall of the rbb.

history

Jazz musicians who shape the Berlin scene have been awarded the SWR Jazz Prize in the past ; but there was no comparable honor related to Berlin. The initiative for a corresponding jazz prize aimed at Berlin came from the IG Jazz Berlin association . The award is intended to give media recognition to the state's diverse jazz scene. In addition, the rbb allows the award winner a concert in the small broadcasting hall. The station's cultural radio broadcasts the recording in its program.

The Berlin Jazz Prize is awarded by appointment procedure; an application is not possible. The jury is reappointed by mutual agreement each year by the two organizers. It includes several musicians (initially Julia Hülsmann , Alexander von Schlippenbach and Nikolaus Neuser , currently in addition to last year's prize winner Kathrin Pechlof and Robert Landfermann ) an independent jazz critic (initially Bert Noglik , currently Angela Ballhorn) and, as chairman of the jury, Ulf Drechsel, jazz editor on the rbb's cultural radio ; A representative of the Senate Chancellery for Cultural Affairs acts as a jury member without voting rights. The Berlin Jazz Prize is to be awarded in the first half of the year. The price is not divisible.
