Laurie Allan

Laurie Allan (born February 19, 1943 in London ) is a British drummer who played mainly in fusion bands on the Canterbury scene .

Live and act

Allan began playing drums when he was twelve. He first played jazz , influenced by Elvin Jones , Ed Blackwell , Billy Higgins and Roy Haynes . He accompanied Roy Harper ( Come out Fighting Gengis Smith ) and played with Chris McGregor , Dudu Pukwana and other musicians on Gwigwi Mrwebi's Mbaqanga Songs (1967). He toured with Gunter Hampel and John McLaughlin in an early rock jazz band and performed at the Essener Songtagen in 1968 .

Then he was part of Pete Brown's band Piblokto before joining Chris Spedding 's first solo project and becoming a member of Formerly Fat Harry . In 1971 he played with Steve Miller at Delivery and replaced Pip Pyle , whose place he also took in 1972 at Gong . In 1973 he switched to Delivery again . The following year he played on the album The Story so Far / Oh Really? by Miller and Lol Coxhill . In 1974 and 1975 he was involved in Barbara Thompson's paraphernalia . He also recorded with Robert Wyatt ; in particular, he was involved in his albums Rock Bottom and Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard . Allan worked occasionally with Gong in the following years , including Mother Gong in 1978 . He also performed with Peter Lemer .

As a studio musician, he also worked with Ralph McTell , Bert Jansch and Gary Windo .
