Annick Nozati

Annick Nozati (born January 15, 1945 in Paris ; † July 7, 2000 ) was a French improvisation vocalist .

Nozati began her professional life as an actress in experimental theaters. Then came an invitation from Jacques Lasry to take part in a chime “Structures Sonores Baschet”, which - through the experience of such a break in vocal improvisation music - prompted her to begin working in music. She was interested in a variety of related areas: for contemporary and new music (she worked in particular with Georges Aperghis , whose works she interpreted for contemporary music theater, and Jean-Yves Bosseur), for poetry and sound poetry , visual arts , Dance and musical theater (she collaborated with Jorge Lavelli, René de Obaldia, Antoine Vitez, among others).

At the end of the 1960s she came into contact with the world of jazz , which resulted in numerous contacts: She worked with Gérard Marais (she played a role in his jazz opera “La Baraque Rouge” in particular), with Ambrose Jackson, Didier Levallet , the Art Ensemble of Chicago , Yochk'o Seffer and Steve Potts . In 1975 she decided to give up the profession of actress in order to devote herself entirely to improvisational singing. In 1979 she founded a duo with the French bassist Joëlle Léandre , which three years later expanded to include the Swiss pianist Irène Schweizer to form the trio Urban Sax .

She turned to musicology and music therapy and taught herself by participating in workshops and formations. Nozati's solo recordings also contain good examples of her improvisations with the sound sculptures of her first mentor Baschet. In 1983 she and Joëlle Léandre expanded the original Feminist Improvising Group to form the European Women Improvising Group (EWIG). Throughout her career she has worked closely with numerous top musicians of avant-garde jazz : occasionally (with Lol Coxhill , Philippe Deschepper , Barre Phillips , Yves Robert , Maggie Nicols , Beñat Achiary , Workshop de Lyon , Phil Minton , Peter Kowald and the Portuguese violinist Carlos Zingaro ) but also regularly (in a trio with Fred Van Hove , with whom she had already worked together since a legendary joint festival appearance in 1984, and the trombonist Hannes Bauer , with the French wind player Daunik Lazro in 1993 and in the same year in a quartet with Michel Godard , Gérard Marais and Jacques Mahieux ). She also appeared in contemporary music theater as an interpreter of the works of Georges Aperghis .

Nozati was also a painter - she saw her music as being particularly inspired by painting - and she taught vocal improvisation at various teaching establishments, including the French University of Lille .
